Murphy joined the Luther College coaching staff in February 2024. He is entering his second season with the Norse.
During the 2024 season, he helped lead a young defense to one of the lowest points allowed totals in a game over the past nine seasons, with the 9–6 win over Anderson University. He also guided the defense to the second best fourth down conversion percentage in the conference during his first season at Luther.
Previously, Murphy coached at Wartburg College (IA), serving as the safeties coach for one year before transitioning to the offensive side of the ball. He coached running backs in 2021 and wide receivers in 2022 and 2023. He also played a significant role in the strength and conditioning program, focusing on speed development.
During his time at Wartburg, the Knights won two conference titles (2022, 2023), finishing both regular seasons with 10–0 records. Each year, the team advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament semifinals, ending both seasons with 13–1 overall records.
At Pella High School (IA), Murphy was an all-state linebacker and team captain, helping lead the Dutch to their first-ever state championship. He went on to play running back at Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), spent a year as a wide receiver at the University of Northern Iowa, and finished his career as a defensive back at Dordt University (IA). He was an academic all-conference performer at both ICCC and Dordt.
Murphy and his wife, Raelynn, live in Decorah with their daughter, Millie.
