WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Luther College Baseball team saw their season come to an end in the NCAA Division III National Tournament as they were defeated by Macalester College 14-5 in an elimination game.
Ike Swanson hit the home run in the third was the team's 46
th home run of the season which is a new school record. The Norse finish the season with a 33-13 record.
The Scots led 4-0 going into the bottom of the third when Swanson put the Norse on the board with a solo home run shot to left field. The home run marked the team's 46
th of the year setting a new school record and Swanson's fifth of the season.
Another three runs were scored in the top of the fourth for Macalester but Luther answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Ty Grewal scored on an rbi single by Swanson.
Gavin Scurr double drove in Swanson.
Xavier Millan also scored in the inning but the Scots still held the 7-4 advantage.
Macalester extended their lead in the fifth scoring six runs and one in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth
Tyrus Werner hit a sac fly to score the final run of the game. The Scots won the game by a final score of 14-5 and recorded 16 hits. Macalester is now 30-16 overall.
Swanson led the offense by going 3-for-5 at the plate including a home run and two rbi. Scurr went 3-for-4 with one double and an rbi. Werner and
Zach Gwost had one rbi each.
As for the pitchers
Josh Stratton (8-2) was credited with the loss pitching three innings allowing four hits, four runs (two earned), one walk and three strikeouts.
Brendan Scoonover pitched the final three frames leading the Norse pitchers with four strikeouts.
While the season is over, the team and several individuals set new records. The team set the single season stolen bases (113), home run (46), strikeouts (436) and hit by pitch (112) records. Gwost enters the record book for single season hits (70) and he tied the single season rbi record (52).
Xavier Millan set the single season hit by pitch record (25) and tied the stolen base record (30).
Noah Kindem now holds the single season home run record (13).
CJ Boudreaux holds both the single season save record (8) and career save record (11).
The team also won it's first outright American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) regular season title since 1985 and 14th in school history.
