WAVERLY, Iowa – In the final road series of the regular season, the Luther softball team split the doubleheader against no. 23 nationally ranked Wartburg (3-4, 4-2). The Norse are now 20-16 overall and 8-6 in the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C).
Game 1: Luther 3, Wartburg 4
Luther trailed by three going into the final frame. With two outs and a runner on first, the Norse hit five straight singles from
Mya Larsen,
Raven Allen,
Madi Elwood,
Avery Nehring and
Evie Strigel. Luther scored three runs on five hits to tie the game. The Knights walked it off in the bottom of the seventh off a double down the leftfield line.
Elwood, Nehring and Allen were all credited with one rbi.
Game 2: Luther 4, Wartburg 2
Allen's single up the middle in the first inning put Luther out in front early. However, in the bottom of the inning the Knights took the lead off a two-run homerun. Later in the third,
Chloe Wagner led off the inning with a solo homerun. Pinch runner
Libby Bygd also scored in the inning on a wild pitch to overtake the lead. One run was scored in the top of the sixth with a homerun from
Madi Elwood.
Wagner and Elwood both hit their first homerun of the season.
Alexa Stevermer pitched her eighth complete game of the season. She allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Wartburg is now 27-9 overall and 12-2 in the A-R-C.
The Norse close out the regular season facing Nebraska Wesleyan University at home on Saturday, May 2. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 1 p.m. for alumni day.
