MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Luther women's soccer team is the conference champions for the first time since 2016. The Norse defeated Monmouth College 4-0 to earn their first Midwest Conference (MWC) title outright.
Ansley Schaak recorded two goals for her first multi-goal game of her career.
Samantha McCorkle and
Ava Stemler also scored in the game.
Luther was on the board 43 seconds into the game.
Sofia Biedermann slipped it to McCorkle who took one touch and scored her fourth goal of the season. Just before halftime, the Norse went up 2-0 in the 43
rd minute off the set piece from the corner flag Schaak knocked it in for her first career goal.
The Norse went back to work in the second half scoring two more goals. In the 52
nd minute, Luther earned a free kick outside of the box. Stemler launched it towards the goal where it dipped in just out of reach of the goalkeeper and under the crossbar for her third goal this season. The final goal of the game came in the 66
th minute, Schaak once again put it into the back of the net.
Luther had 22 shots with 10 on goal while Monmouth only had three shots with two on goal for the entire game.
Rylie Bucklin and
Alannah McKibben each recorded a save in the contest.
Luther will now host the MWC Tournament semifinals and championship games in Decorah, Iowa on Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7. The Norse will face the winner of the no. 4 seed Grinnell College or the no. 5 seed Beloit College at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.
