Warren G. Berg Will Be Presented Athletic Meritorious Service Award Posthumously

Warren G. Berg, a 1948 graduate of Luther College, will be presented the Luther College Athletic Meritorious Service Award posthumously on Friday, Oct. 3, during Homecoming weekend, as part of the Luther College Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony.

The Athletic Meritorious Service Award was formulated to recognize individuals for outstanding contributions and service to Luther College athletics. The honorees do not need to be a graduate of the college and are selected by the Hall of Fame committee.

Following graduation, Berg was hired by the college and taught in the Department of Economics, Accounting, and Management from 1948 until 1988, serving as department head at the time of his retirement. During his tenure, he also served as the college's first Sports Information Director (SID) from 1950-66. In 1963 he was the first SID from a non-athletic scholarship college or university, to serve as president of the National College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) now called the College Sports Communicators.

During his 16 years as Luther's SID, he also served on the NCAA Public Relations Committee and was part of the committee appointed to sign the first television contract for the NCAA National Basketball Tournament.

In 1985, CoSIDA established the Warren G. Berg Award, presented annually to recognize an SID from the college division (NCAA DII, DIII, NAIA, Two-year Colleges, and Canadian institutions) as the top professional of the year.

In 1997 he was awarded the Scoop Hudgens Lifetime Achievement Award from the All-American Football Foundation.

Berg passed away on March 26, 2012 at the age of 87.
