DECORAH, Iowa - The Luther softball team defeated Cornell 9-1 in five innings and 5-1 in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Norse are now 24-8 overall and are on a four-game win streak.
Game 1: Luther 9, Cornell 1 (5 inn.)
A two RBI single from
Riley Sauser put the Norse up 2-0 in the first. The Rams would cut the lead in half in the third. In the fourth Luther scored five runs on five hits including a solo home run from
Teagan Hansen and a three-run homer from
Chloe Wagner. Both home runs are the first of the season for Hansen and Wagner. This was Hansen's first home run of her career. The Norse now held a 7-1 advantage.
In the final frame
Anna Forari led off with a double.
Ken Vavrichek followed with a RBI single. Then
Abby Spore hit the walk-off RBI single into left field ending the game 9-1 in five innings.
On the mound Olivia Enlger allowed five hits, one run and one walk. She also had four strikeouts. Vavrichek and Sauser were 3-3. Wagner and Sauser had three RBI each.
Game 2: Luther 5, Cornell 1
Just like the first game Sauser hit the RBI single scoring the game's first run as Luther took a 1-0 lead. Cornell would tie the game in the second. The game went scoreless until the sixth as Luther came up to bat. The Norse drove in four runs on four hits as Forari, Spore, Sauser and Wanger earned RBI.
The Luther defense shutdown the Rams in the seventh. As they only faced four batters to secure their second sweep in two days.
Cyrah Rasmussen started the game giving up three hits, one run, three walks and three strikeouts. Engler got the win improving her season record to 16-4 overall. She did not allow a hit in her three innings of work allowing just two walks while striking out four. Sauser was 2-4 with two RBI.
