Knights Defeat Norse in Weekend Opener 2-1 in 11 Innings

Luther and Wartburg opened their three-game American Rivers Conference series in Waverly last night at 6 p.m. at Hertel Field. With the score knotted 1-1 entering the bottom of the 11th, the Norse committed two errors that led to the game winner for the Knights who secured the victory 2-1.

Harry Blum pitched a no-decision gem. Blum went eight innings, allowed one earned run on four hits, walked four and struck out 12. Blake Jondle (1-2) took over for the final two frames and did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out five.

The Norse tallied seven hits, three coming off the bat of Noah Kindem and two by both Gavin Scurr and Mark Prince. Patrick Fontaine drove in Luther's lone run on a fielders choice in the seventh that tied the game 1-1.

In that frame, lead-off batter Will Heithoff was hit by a pitch. He then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Fontaine hit a sharply hit ball to the left side of the infield and the play at the plate to throw Heithoff out was not in time.

The Knights game winner was also the result of the lead-off hitter Caleb Andrews getting hit by a pitch. Back-to-back throwing errors on sack bunts, allowed Andrews to advanced to second on the first error, and score from second on the second error.

The loss gives Luther an A-R-C mark of 4-5, 15-10 overall. Wartburg improved to 6-7 in league play, 15-10 overall.

These two teams will wrap up the series in Waverly tomorrow. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1 p.m.
