Luther hosted the University of Dubuque for the conference opener this afternoon in the valley. The Spartans swept the Norse 7-0 and 11-4.
Game 1 - Dubuque 7, Luther 0
Dubuque starting pitcher Johnny Blake threw a no-hitter. Blake faced 28 batters and walked one and struck out 10. He issued a walk to the second batter he faced in the bottom of the fourth, and then proceeded to retire the next 17 batters en route to the victory.
Offensively, the Spartans did the majority of their damage in the sixth frame, scoring six runs on four hits. They added one more run in the seventh.
Game 2 - Dubuque 11, Luther 4
The Spartans continued to swing hot bats producing 13 hits and scored runs in all but three innings in the nightcap.
Josh Matanich led the Norse offensive attack going 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in one run.
Mark Prince drove in a run with a triple in the second and was credited with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Luther is now 11-6 overall, while Dubuque improved to 13-4.
