Norse Beaten By Kohawks In Overtime In First Round of A-R-C Playoffs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The No.6 seed Luther women's basketball team fell in the opening round of the American Rivers Conference tournament to No. 3 seed Coe 76-74 in overtime. Haylie Strum scored the game tying bucket with 27 seconds left in regulation to force an overtime period. The Kohawks narrowly outscored the Norse 13-11 in overtime. Luther was led by Jordan Rubie who scored a season high 16 points. The Norse end the season with an overall record of 11-15 overall and 6-10 in the A-R-C. 

Luther was on the board first as Kailey Jones went in for the layup just a minute into the contest. As the quarter continued the score would be knotted up four times. At the end of the first frame the game was all tied at 13-13. 

In the second quarter, Coe increased their lead to 32-24 with 2:27 before the break. Layken McGuire started the Norse on a 9-2 run to close the first half, pulling within one 33-34.

The Norse outscored the Kohawks 19-15 in the third quarter and held a 52-49 advantage heading into the fourth and final frame. 

During the final quarter, neither team had a lead larger than two points. Lizzie Kauls scored a layup in the paint putting the Norse ahead 56-54 with 6:25 to play. Coe and Luther battled down the stretch that saw five lead changes. With 42 seconds remaining, the Kohawks held a 63-61 advantage, when Strum answered scored on a layup that tied the game at 63-63 with 27 ticks left on the clock. Both teams missed opportunities in the finals seconds but came up short sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Kate Hosking scored in the paint giving the Norse a 74-73 lead with 2:15 remaining. Both teams went scoreless until the final 25 seconds, when the Kohawks Ellie Wisner hit a three point shot that proved to be the game winner and sealed the 76-74 victory. 

Luther out rebounded Coe 46-34. The Norse also scored 32 points in the paint.

  • Jones tallied a double-double for the third straight game with 17 rebounds and 14 points. 
  • Strum recorded 12 points and seven rebounds. She also had four assists.
