DECORAH, Iowa - The Luther men's soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion hosting the American Rivers Conference Tournament Semifinal after a 1-1 draw in regulation and two full overtime periods. Nebraska Wesleyan won 3-2 on penalty kicks. The Norse are 8-4-6 overall.
Enzo Mitidieri received the ball at the top of the box where
Matthew Sale was making his run on the far side. Sale took a few touches before firing it into the back of the net for his third goal of the season and his third in four games. It was also the fastest goal scored by the Norse this season just 31 seconds into the contest. Luther had a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Luther had plenty of chances to score their second of the night with several hitting off the post and cross bar. With less than three minutes to go Nebraska Weslayan found the equalizer off a free kick forcing the game into sudden death overtime.
Scoreless through the first ten minutes of overtime a second period was played. With eight seconds left
Nels Mortenson sent in a bending ball that nearly went in but just missed over the crossbar. This sent the game into a penalty kick shootout to decide the winner.
Aitor Lopez came in for
Jack Bell for the penalty kick shootout. Still 0-0 after two players form the Prairie Wolves missed and one Luther player missed.
Nico Cedeno put the Norse on the board scoring with a chip shot over the goalkeeper. Nebraska Wesleyan followed with a make of their own.
Javier Pastor Valls made his shot count as Luther went up 2-1. The Prairie Wolves answered again to tie it at 2-2. After a miss by the Norse, the Prairie Wolves scored to take a 3-2 advantage. Nebraska Wesleyan made the stop on Luther's next shot to advance to the A-R-C Championship on Saturday.
Nebraska Wesleyan is now 11-7-1 overall and will face Wartburg in the A-R-C Championship.
