Norse Pick up First Win of the Season against Pipers

DECORAH, Iowa – Back at home for the first time in 2023, the Luther women's soccer team shut out Hamline 2-0 in their first win of the season. Lauren Linkletter and Cassiah James were the goal scorers with one in each half.
 
In the first half the Norse maintained and controlled the ball in the Pipers half of the field. Luther kept the pressure on Hamline searching for the back of the net. In the 22nd minute Emma Lin nearly had the first goal slotting it low and to the left but the Pipers keeper was there to make the save.
 
Not long after Maggie Haller (Minneapolis, Minn. / DeLaSalle) set up for the long throw in sending it toward the box. Then Lauren Linkletter (Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) was there to put it away for her first goal of the season in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead. They would take the one goal lead headed into the break.
 
In the second half Hamline came out taking chances from distance to throw off the Norse defense. However, the Luther quickly swarmed the ball any time a Piper player had it.
 
Later Haller set up for another long throw in but then threw it towards Soley Valdimarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland / Verzlunarskoli Islands). Who sent it a beautiful cross towards goal where it was flicked on goal by Cassiah James (Evansville, Wis. / Evansville). Now up 2-0 the Norse felt comfortable where they were at.
 
Irelyn Baumberger (Evansville, Wis. / Evansville) had to made two saves to keep the Pipers off the board for the combined shutout with Ken Vavrichek (Bloomington, Minn. / The Blake School). Luther picks up their first win of the season by a final score of 2-0.
 
TOP NORSE
  • Lauren Linkletter (Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) scored the first goal at home for the Norse in the 2023 season. This is also her third career goal.
  • Soley Valdimarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland / Verzlunarskoli) tallied her first career assist as Norse.
  • Cassiah James (Evansville, Wis. / Evansville) using her head to flick it just out of reach of the keeper for her first goal of the season.
