ROCHESTER, NY –
Ian Kelly (Littleton, Colo. / Heritage) earned All-American status with his eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship with a time of 3:47.32 in the 1500-meter run. He also bested his own school record for the third time this season by .36. Kelly is the first All-American in Luther Men's Outdoor Track and Field since 2007 and the first 1500m runner since Stacy Sundent finished fifth in 2001.
Ian Kelly was content to hold in the middle of the pack around the track conserving energy for the long haul. With 600 meters to go the front of the pack the pushed the pace but Kelly kept with it holding until the final push. It was a crammed finish line but in track it only merely takes a second to know when you finished. Kelly became an All-American by just .01 to finish eighth. It was a fitting way for the senior to close out his first ever trip to the national championship.
