ROCHESTER, NY – The Luther Men's Track and Field team hadn't had a NCAA Championship Qualifier since Austin Bauer in 2014 but it all changed when
Ian Kelly found out he made the mark in the 1500. Nearly 900 miles away from Decorah at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex at St. John Fisher University, Kelly was among the 22 vying for twelve spots for the finals on Saturday, May 27. He earned the final spot with a time of 3:49.19 squeaking into finals earning the chance to run again at 1:25 p.m. CT.
It's been 22 years since the last Luther runner, Stacy Sundet, qualified for finals in the 1500. For Kelly getting out of prelims wasn't going to be easy. However, for the school record holder at 3:47.68, he ran a great race, finishing sixth in his heat at 3:49.19. Kelly will now compete in the finals on Saturday and is the only runner from the American Rivers Conference running in the race.
