DECORAH, Iowa - Aidan Bailey's two free throws sealed the 71-68 victory over Viterbo University in the home opener on Wednesday. The Norse also extend their win streak to three. Luther had three players in double-digits with
Matthew Franzen,
Daniel Webster and
Ben Gill.
The Norse came out strong in their home opener. The only time the score was tied was at 2-2 with19:01 in the first half. Luther took over the lead for good and the rest of the game after a jumper from Gill at 18:27. The Norse shot 51.6 percent from the field going 16-31 and 37 percent from beyond the arc for 6-16. Luther had a 40-27 advantage going into the locker room.
In the second half, Bailey hit a jump shot to push the Norse lead to 14 at 13:37. Then both teams went cold as neither team found the basket for nearly three minutes. Franzen hit a three with 7:19 left in the second half to put the Norse at a 16-point advantage.
The V-Hawks began their 10-0 run at 5:57 left on the clock closing in on the Luther lead. Later, Bailey scored a layup at 2:20 to go and the Norse still ahead 68-62. However, Viterbo would pull within one with 27 seconds left.
Mikkel Schutte went 1-2 at the charity strip to make it a one possession game for Viterbo. Then the V-Hawks knocked down one of two free throws. After the miss the Viterbo collected the rebound but missed the three-point shot. There to collect the defensive rebound was Bailey which forced the V-Hawks to foul. Bailey went to the line for two shots. He would make both. Viterbo had one second to work with as they heaved one near half court missing it short. With the win, the Norse extend its win streak to three.
Luther out rebounded Viterbo 42-29. The Norse also had another night of success in the paint for 28 of their points.
