Men's Soccer Advances On Penalty Kicks 4-2 Over Simpson

Luther goes 4-4 in penalty kick shootout to move on to A-R-C Semifinal

DECORAH, Iowa - It was a high scoring affair in the Luther men's soccer contest versus Simpson College on Saturday. The two teams battled to a 3-3 draw at the end of regulation which added another two overtime periods. Neither team scored in extra time forcing penalty kicks. The Norse went a perfect 4 for 4 to advance on penalty kicks 4-2 to move onto the A-R-C Semifinal at No. 1 Loras College on Wednesday, November 1. Luther is 6-7-6 overall.

The Storm were on the board first in the 7th minute. Luther responded in the 19th minute as Jorge Murillo who flicked the ball towards Lenny Lechner. Lechner used his head, tossing it back into the net. That would set the game even at 1-1.

Later in the 41st minute, Ben Bolte dribbled the ball into the box. A Simpson defender slipped giving Bolte the opportunity to pass it to Ramzi Ouro-Akondo who slotted it into the goal. This was the first lead for the Norse of the game at 2-1.

However, just before the halftime whistle the Storm tied the game at 2-2.

Then in second half, Simpson reclaimed the lead in the 66th minute 3-2. Luther kept fighting as the clock ticked on. In the 85th minute, Hernan Manzanet drilled it on frame towards the goal but the Simpson goalie blocked it. Then Ouro-Akondo collected the rebound firing it in for a goal for his second of the game. Once again the game was tied this time at 3-3. In the final seconds it looked like the Norse were going to have a game winner but the Storm goalie came up big.

Then in two ten minute overtime periods neither team could score and the game was forced to go to penalty kicks.

Luther sent Javier Munoz, Raul Ferrandez,  Lechner and Manzanet to take penalty kicks. All of them made their shots count. Kai Haroldson was the keeper in for the Norse during the penalty kicks. He came up big making a save on the first penalty shot attempt by Simpson. The Norse advance to the A-R-C Semifinal on penalty kicks 4-2.
