The American Rivers Conference has announced that Luther College senior Ben Phipps (Townparks, Ardee, County Leuth, Ireland/Dundalk Grammar School) has been named the league's Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, May. 1.
Phipps helped lead Luther to the 2022 conference championship. He won the individual title and was named the league's MVP with a 54-hole score of 221 (+8). He claimed medalist honors after defeating teammate Jay Fjelstul (So, Decorah, Iowa), who also shot a 54-hole total of 221, on the second hole of a sudden death playoff.Â
After shooting a day one 27-hole score of 115, Phipps posted a 106 for the final 27-holes.
The senior is the sixth conference champion for the Norse and first since 2013. He also earned all-conference honors (top-10) for the third time of his career.
After capturing the team championship, Luther also earned the league's automatic berth to the 2022 NCAA III National Tournament that will be held at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida May 10-13.
