Norse Sweep Duhawks In A-R-C Opener

DEOCRAH, Iowa - The Luther softball team swept Loras College on Friday 3-1 and 4-3 (9 inn.) in walk-off fashion thanks to a two-run home run from Ken Vavrichek. Olivia Engler picked up both wins in the circle as the Norse improved to a 17-5 overall and 2-0 A-R-C record.

Game 1: Luther 3, Loras 1
Engler and the defense knocked down the first three Duhawks in order in the first. Luther had their first opportunity to get on the board first and they did just that. With runners on the corners Raven Allen singled into left field driving the first run home for a 1-0 lead.

Later in the fourth, the Norse would add two more runs to their total. Chloe Wagner drove in Allen on her RBI single. Wagner would steal home two batters later.

The Duhawks captured their first run in the fifth and with two outs and the bases loaded they continued to threaten the Norse. Engler would get out of the jam ending the inning on a strikeout.

Luther would secure the win in the seventh as Engler and the defense shutdown Loars 3-1.

Engler pitched her ninth complete game of the season and set a career high of 10 strikeouts. She gave up just two hits, one run and five walks.

Game 2: Luther 4, Loras 3 (9 inn.)
After four scoreless innings the Duhawks scored on a two-run home run in the fifth. The Norse would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Anna Forari. Then in the sixth, Chloe Wagner hit a sac fly into center tying the game at two. The game was forced to extras as neither team scored in the seventh.

In the ninth, Loras reclaimed the lead taking a 3-2 advantage. Then Luther was down to their final out as Forari doubled deep into center. Vavrichek hit the first pitch sending it out of the park for a two-run home run and Norse victory. This was the first career home run for Vavrichek and the second win in extra innings this season for Luther.

Forari was 2-5 with two doubles, one run and one RBI. Cyrah Rasmussen started the game on the mound pitching three innings giving up one hit, three walks and two strikeouts. Engler came on for the rest of the way. She gave up nine hits, three runs, one walk and one strikeout.
