ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Luther softball team defeated Grinnell College 2-1 in eight innings for their first win of the season. Followed by a 3-2 loss to Macalester to close out the Rochester Dome Games. Overall Luther is now 1-3 on the season.
GAME 1: LUTHER 2 at GRINNELL 1 (8 INN.)
Both teams were scoreless until the sixth. With two outs and a runner on first,Â
Jerrianne Dannenmueller hit a double into left field that allowed
Alison Martinez who was pinch running for
Olivia Engler at second to score and give the Norse a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers would tie the game in the seventh thanks to a solo home run by Jasmine Oda, forcing extra innings.Â
In the eighth, with
Ken Vavrichek on third and
Riley Sauser on first,
Jaydan Clayton hit a single into center, bringing Vavrichek home for what proved to be the game winner. Although Luther was still out in front they still had another half an inning to go before this one was over.Â
Engler and the Norse defensively shut down the Pioneers. After giving up a lead off walk catcher
Abby Spore and
Anna Forari caught the runner stealing. Luther struck down the next two batters with a ground out and a strikeout.Â
In the circle, Engler picked up her first win of the season allowing just one hit and had five strikeouts.Â
GAME 2: LUTHER 2 vs MACALESTER 3
Luther struck first in the second game of the day in the dome. In the bottom of the first a single from Sauser drove in a run. The Scots rallied in the top of the second tacking on three runs of their own.Â
In the bottom of the third, Allison Martinez reached on an error.
Anna Forari doubled to center field giving the Norse runners on second and third with no outs. Vavrichek grounded out to second base, Maratinez scored on the play and Forari advanced to third. The Scots retired the next two batters and then held the Norse scoreless in the final four frames.

The Norse travel to Clermont, Florida for The Spring Games Saturday, March 16 through Saturday, March 23. They will face Clarkson University 10:15 a.m. CT, followed by Wellesley College at 12:30 p.m. CT on the 16th.
