Luther traveled to Waverly, Iowa this afternoon for its A-R-C opener and was defeated by the Knights 3-2 and 6-5 in eight innings.
In game one, the Norse held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Knights strung together three consecutive doubles that produced two runs that secured the come-from-behind victory.
Sydney Schultz provided both runs for the Norse thanks to solo home runs to left field in the first and fourth frames.
Kendra Cooper (4-3) went the distance in the circle and allowed three runs on six hits, walked three and struck out six.
Ashley Nelson (5-2) picked up the win for the Knights. Nelson allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out five.
In the nightcap, Luther held a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the fourth. The Knights scored a run in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
The Norse scored their two runs in the second thanks to doubles by
Abby Spore,
Kyal Heydt and
Emily Versnik. In the fourth,
Anna Forari hit a three-run home run to right field that scored
Belle Berg who led off with a single and Versnik who walked.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Knights Kaylie Springer led-off with a single up the middle and advanced to second after Sydney Illg drew a walk. Two batters later, Lauren Frerichs hit a two-out double that scored Springer for the game winner.
Luther is now 0-2 in the A-R-C, 11-7 overall. Wartburg improved to 4-2 in league play, 17-7 overall.
Luther will begin its home schedule this Saturday, April 9 when it will host Nebraska Wesleyan University. The double header will begin at 1:00 p.m.
